National Helpline

Through our national telephone helpline, we answer thousands of questions every year from people with Medicare, their family members and friends. Our trained volunteers and staff spend the time to help each caller understand their Medicare benefits, find the right coverage, and understand how any existing coverage works with Medicare, in order to ensure seamless access to affordable health care.

The thousands of stories we hear help to  inform our policy positions and ensure that advocacy efforts reflect the realities of people with Medicare nationwide.

Services for People with Limited Incomes

Medicare beneficiaries living on low or fixed incomes have tough choices to make. Many do not know they are eligible for programs that may pay some or most of the costs of Medicare. Each caller to our helpline is screened for these benefits—the Medicare Part D Extra Help subsidy, and the Medicare Savings Program. Extra Help lowers prescription drug costs, while the Medicare Savings Program pays the monthly Part B premium. Together, these benefits save people roughly $5,000 each year in out-of-pocket health costs. If a caller is not eligible, we will do our best to check for other potential benefits, like State Pharmaceutical Assistance Programs.
