Statement by Medicare Rights Center President Joe Baker on
New Funding for Early Retiree Health Coverage

New York, NY—Today’s announcement by Secretary Sebelius of a $5 billion reinsurance fund for health plans covering retirees who are over 55, but not yet eligible for Medicare, shores up the bridge to Medicare coverage for many older adults. The funding will help companies, unions and others to continue providing coverage for early retirees in the face of rising health care premiums. Research shows that people who go without health insurance as they approach age 65 are in worse health and need more care after they enroll in Medicare. By helping maintain coverage for these early retirees, this fund will help keep down Medicare’s cost of providing them care.
