Many people know that Medicare offers an invaluable safety net to the nearly 6.3 million Americans with severe and incapacitating disabilities. Few are aware that they have to wait at least 24 months after being deemed disabled and too sick to work to get Medicare coverage. The "Medicare waiting period" leaves about 400,000 Americans with disabilities uninsured, and many more underinsured, when they need healthcare most.

During this time people with disabilities often face high medical bills and must choose between buying food and filling prescriptions, or receiving medical care and paying rent. The devastating effect this has upon their health, finances, and quality of life is why the Medicare Rights Center is working to make people aware of the waiting period and the need for it to be eliminated.
